World Book Day!

Our book is by Enid Blyton - The Faraway Tree. Children decided that they wanted to find out more about Enid Blyton, when she was born, where she lived, her education and what inspired her to write books for children. We used laptops to help us fill in our author study sheet. We drew some of the storybook characters, made bookmarks and wrote our version of the Far Away Tree. Then we took photographs to make World Book Day Character Selfies from our other favourite books. We had a wonderful time and the children helped to decorate their classroom door.

Mystery and Role-Play

LOST IN THE LIBRARY!

The children have had an excellent time reading and exploring some of their favourite books in the library (we couldn't use our school library - so we imagined our classroom being the library). The children realised that the librarians had left the library. As the time to go approaches, they try the door and it is LOCKED!

Luckily Mrs Deakin had a plan with a set of clues that gave the code to open the door!

The children have had to solve the clues and puzzles to discover the passcode number to unlock the padlock and find the way out of the library.

FairTrade.

Our children have been learning about FairTrade and understand that people worldwide are earning a living right now for growing food, some of which ends up as our breakfast food.  The children talked about food and how it is produced and is shipped around the world and sold in our shops. Many of our products in our supermarkets are made from the things imported from less developed countries in Africa and Asia.

FairTrade is about the producers being paid a fair price for the things we buy; as we have got some of these products, we have helped them get food, clothing, education, water and a more financially stable life. 

Year 3 children and I wish to thank Tesco Extra at Warrington, who gave our class £70 pounds and a trolley to spend on FairTrade products in their store. Also a big thank you to Mr and Mrs Crombie for banners, photographs, stickers and a variety of lovely Fair Trade products.  Every child went home with a FairTrade goody bag full of activities and produce. 

Science - Plants

Year 3 have been learning about plants and can name the different parts of flowering plants and explain their jobs. The children set up an investigation to find out what plants need to grow well. They grew cress seeds on a window ledge and some in a dark cupboard. The children measured how tall their cress had grown. Then recorded their results in a diary and bar chart. 

The children can name different parts of a flower and explain their role in pollination and fertilisation. They understand and order the stages of the life cycle of a flowering plant.

The children also enjoyed learning about how water is transported up through the stem of the flower. We used blue food colouring in the water and over a few days, our white carnations changed to blue.   

PE Stars!

Year 3 have had lots of fun in P.E.

We have been focusing on supporting our peers by encouraging each other, praising each other and offering advice on how we can improve our work. We found different ways of travelling on the gym equipment. The children worked brilliantly and we are very proud them!

P.E.  - Well-Being and Working Together

Children used stopwatches to time and record their activities.

Mathematics and Outdoor Learning

We have extensively learnt about Place Value and how to use the column method for Addition and Subtraction. They are now much more secure following these methods.

PSHE  - SAY NO TO BULLYING!

Year 3 work together to create a happy, safe, caring and stimulating environment.

We continually reinforce the importance of our class motto to:-

"Treat others as you want to be treated!"

 ICT -Coding

Year 3 have dedicated computing lessons once a week. These teach them key skills computer science, information technology and online safety. All children have quickly become familiar with use of the keyboard and mouse and can organise their own files.

Remembrance Day

Year 3  - we focused on two soldiers who went to war.

Our first soldier is Mark Hill, who was killed in action at a very young age of 21.  He will always remain in our hearts.

Our second soldier is Albert Marr, who wouldn't leave his pet baboon called Jackie. Jackie had his own uniform, ration book and cutlery set. He was trained to salute to his senior officer. One of Jackie's jobs was to light the soldiers cigarettes'.  When they left the war Jackie sadly died in a house fire while Albert lived well into his eighties. 

We remembered and prayed for them in our Memorial Garden.

There's No Place Like Home

We have been having fun in Geography exploring the UK. We can name and locate some of the cities using our Atlases.   

Mathematics - Place Value

Year 3 are learning how to represent numbers to 100 using base ten apparatus.
